Healthy Habits At An Early Age For Babies And Toddlers
Nutrition is a vital part of the development of humans, plants, and animals alike. There is a delicate balance that must be met in order for a person, especially a child, to develop properly. When children are younger, parents encourage them to eat fruits and vegetables, but it is generally up to the child what is eaten. It is up to you as a parent to ensure that your baby or toddler is getting the right nutrients each day to grow strong and healthy. There are many questions in the modern age when it comes to health, but by following some simple rules, you will ensure that your baby or toddler will grow into a self reliant adult that makes healthy eating decisions. It starts from the very first bite of food.
Healthy eating habits begin with the pregnancy before birth. As your child is absorbing all of his nutrients through your body, you should make sure you are eating properly and abstaining from all toxins and chemicals. It is important that you are taking the right combination of prenatal vitamins as well. Moderate exercise is also great for your body, especially in your earlier months. You are preparing yourself to be strong and healthy throughout pregnancy and birth. When you begin breastfeeding, it is important to keep these same concepts in mind. You are still feeding your child through your body, meaning that alcohol and caffeine should be off limits. Keeping your body healthy is very imperative to your child’s first year.
Toddlers should also be eating a variety of fruits and vegetables. As large amounts of fruits and vegetables contain lots of water that fill their stomachs, it is important that you balance this with protein and whole grain, complex carbohydrates. Children also need lots of calcium to stay healthy. Children are growing critically until they are 18 or older, so each day has to be filled with the right foods. More whole food and less processed and sweetened foods should be consumed. Sugar should never be added to drinks and rarely added to foods. Choose natural sweeteners that are less processed or stick to juice. Make sure that they are outside so that they can absorb calcium with the vitamin D they are getting from the sun.
If you have a picky child or a child that doesn’t like a particular food, do not dwell on it. Move on to something else that is just as good for them. Then in a few days, when the child has forgotten that they do not like broccoli, prepare it in a different way so that he can try it with fresh perspective. Showing children that there are different ways to eat different foods may encourage them to eat a variety more often. You can also add carrots and other veggies finely chopped to pasta sauce, potato salads, and with cheese sauce or other appetizing flavor disguises.
If you are going to provide the best diet possible for your little ones, you will want to research the different food they should eat. Also, spend some time understanding vitamin absorption. If you are not optimally absorbing nutrients, you and your child may be missing out.
